Daniel Phillips

"And I Could Run Forever"

My dreams have never been normal,
Visions of the past, present, and future.
But last night I dreamt of a long-haired boy,
Lying in a hospital bed.
Of a red thread tied to my finger that stretched far away.
I dreamt of sidewalks, I dreamt of fire.
My worn out sneakers, my mother's voice.
I felt the cold air stinging my cheeks, the bark of a lonely tree.
And I could run forever.
