Word reached the publisher’s desk and they requested to interview staff members to share with the county the literary club’s purpose and activities. The following semester, the newspaper did a county-wide spread on the literary magazine itself for all that the students were accomplishing.
“Your Word” Scholarship
The Atlantic Center for the Arts in New Smyrna Beach conducts an annual summer 2-week residency for high school students who are interested in honing their skills in the literary arts. Acclaimed writers in the genres of poetry, fiction, and creative non-fiction are flown in to live among the students during this residency and lead creative writing workshops while the students build their writing portfolios. These works are later shared at a closing ceremony open to the public. The cost per student is $1,700 and the ACA has created a scholarship for one Deltona High student, chosen through a blindly judged creative writing competition, to attend this residency. In return, Mr. Emerick-Brown organizes live Skype sessions between students and acclaimed writers from around the country during the residency such as former U.S. Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky, Pulitzer Prize winner Tracy K. Smith, and more. The student will share what they learned with fellow students the following school year.
