"The Hero's Guide to Saving Your Kingdom"
by Christopher Healy:
Books and SkypE
Not only did Howl fully fund this endeavor, but we arranged for the author himself, Chris Healy, to Skype with the elementary school students to talk about the fun of story-telling and reading.
Good for those students and we hope that more elementary schools get kids jazzed about reading and writing! |
Starke Elementary School in DeLand, Florida needed the money to purchase "The Hero's Guide to Saving Your Kingdom" by Christopher Healy for students. The goal was to encourage reading and engagement with students through fun, inspirational, and well-written stories.

Passion for poetry
In 2014, Howl funded Wendi Librach's Poetry for Passion project. Librach, who is a teacher at Flamingo Elementary, wanted to teach her students not only to appreciate poetry, but to love it. The author of the books Librach wanted for her students, Andrew Toffoli, visited and talked with the students.
"My request for funding was to be able to introduce poetry into my Art curriculum. I wanted to purchase a series of beautifully illustrated "kid friendly" books that my students could easily identify with and be inspired to emulate . Mr. Emerick-Brown's students saw my request and decided to pool their efforts to help finance my program. Because of them, my students not only created amazing works of art, but write beautiful haiku poems, learned the art of calligraphy and on their own time- created additional poems and illustrations that they joyfully brought back to my art room to share with me! I am so grateful to him for inspiring HIS students and enabling MY kids to benefit from their paying it forward !!!" ~ Wendi Librach |

Silver Sands Middle School Warrior Scribes
For the 2014-15 school year, Silver Sands Middle School's students in Volusia County, Florida, wanted to create a student literary magazine called Warrior Scribes. They reached out for funding and Howl's staff raised money to donate to their literary endeavors. And they ended up with a beautiful publication at the end of the year. See below.

Big Fish Big Night
In conjunction with Howl, the Florida Literary Arts Coalition put together an event where patrons watched the film “Big Fish,” followed by a live Skype on the big screen with the author of the novel, Daniel Wallace. This was put together in St. Augustine.
Creative Writing Workshop
Twice per year - in the fall and spring semesters - , we have a creative writing workshop for interested students from Deltona, New Smyrna Beach, and DeLand high schools. This is held at the Atlantic Center for the Arts where students get a tour of the grounds, learn what the ACA does, find out more about the writer's residency, and participate in two rotating creative writing workshops run by Dylan Emerick-Brown and Brian Lysholm. Lunch is be provided. The day’s program is completely FREE!
The Atlantic Center for the Arts in New Smyrna Beach conducts an annual summer 2-week residency for high school students who are interested in honing their skills in the literary arts. Acclaimed writers in the genres of poetry, fiction, and creative non-fiction are flown in to live among the students during this residency and lead creative writing workshops while the students build their writing portfolios. These works are later shared at a closing ceremony open to the public. The cost per student is $1,700 and the ACA has created a scholarship for one Deltona High student, chosen through a blindly judged creative writing competition, to attend this residency. In return, Mr. Emerick-Brown organizes live Skype sessions between students and acclaimed writers from around the country during the residency such as former U.S. Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky, Pulitzer Prize winner Tracy K. Smith, and more. The student will share what they learned with fellow students the following school year.
